March 17, 2011, 9:00 PM. These graceful fairy shrimp, found in a vernal (spring) pond in eastern, Virginia, are seen swimming with young fairy shrimp. The adults, oddly, are over one year old, found still alive from the previous season. The tiny fairy shrimp of this season, seen here with the adult, are only a few weeks old. Fairy shrimp typically do not live more than one season in an ephemeral pool, comprised of snow melt and winter rains, which usually fades and dries completely within a few short months. This site never fully dried out, as vernal pools do. This enabled two different generations to survive together. Something that almost never happens. Video: Brian La Fountain.
