Maine has 111 schools where 50 percent or more of the student body is not meeting academic standards. A recent Harvard University study showed that over the last 20 years, Maine ranked 40th out of 41 states evaluated in student academic growth.

Maine students have potential and the ability to succeed. However, it has become clear that our education system today is failing too many of our students.

In response to these results, Governor Paul LePage and Education Commissioner Stephen Bowen unveiled their new ABC initiative. ABC stands for "Accountability, Best practices, and Choice."

A: Accountability - Maine schools will be assessed by the academic growth of their students. This will better evaluate which schools are effective and which need improvement, ensuring greater accountability of Maine schools.

B: Best Practices - Maine will look at effective tools and systems used by other states to bring the best education practices possible to Maine.

C: Choice - Maine will provide students with choices in both their curricula as well as the education methods that best suit their needs.

The LePage Administration has recognized that the status quo is not working for Maine's students. With your support we can give our students a brighter future. Let's put students first.
