Making a basted egg is quite easy AND fun ! First of all, a properly basted egg is one that the white is cooked fully and the yoke is gooey inside. The real test to see if it is TRULY a basted egg is to see if there is a nice, thin, white film over the yoke. Some short-order cooks simply flip the egg for a few seconds on the grill and call it done - but that's not how it's done. When lazy cooks do it this way, (unless you really want it that way) the white sometimes isn't fully cooked and is gooey - many times, the yoke will become more hardened that it should for a true basted egg. Some restaurants won't even make them this way - like a few places in New Jersey because they are scared of undercooking an egg !
