In 2000, I discovered and visited the village in Alsace, France from where my paternal grandmother's family emigrated to Chicago in 1874. In 2002, I returned to Alsace to look for the original house where my family lived and French national television (France 2) filmed my visit for the country's top-rated magazine-style program "Envoye Special." The original broadest of this program, entitled "La Généalogie," was seen by 4 million people. This video clip, part of a longer piece of reporting, shows me looking for the precise roots of the Kling family in the village of Houssen, just outside Colmar. It is mostly in French but you will hear me speaking English, even though I speak French, because the program's policy is to have everyone speak in their native tongue. "Envoye Special" produced a sequel to this report in 2012.
