Another mark of a false prophet or a false teacher these last days is that these men and women will have little Christian character about them. In fact, Jesus warned us of that in Matthew 7:15-16 when He said this, "Beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits."
You see the fruit of the Spirit will mark a true prophet and if this fruit is not evident, then the man and his messages are to be rejected. You might ask, "Well, what fruit should we look for specifically?" Well, we need to ask ourselves when we see this man or this woman preaching or teaching the Word of God, this person who claims to be a teacher of the Word or a prophet of God, we ask ourselves, "Is their life marked by purity? Do they live a pure life? Do they preach on holiness and godly living?" We might want to ask, "Are they open to criticism and subordinate to the authority of Scripture? Will they be corrected by the Word of God?" You see a man who is not willing to be corrected by truth, friends, is a man filled with pride rather than humility and that is a mark of the flesh rather than the fruit of the Spirit. We might ask, "Does he possess a spirit of humility?" Remember 1 Peter 5:5-6 says that God resists the proud but He gives grace to the humble? We might ask, "Is he a servant?" You see this is the primary mark of leadership sent by Jesus Christ. Remember John 13 Jesus said only once, "I set you an example" and there that was an example of washing the dirty feet of His rebellious disciples. You see a true man of God -- yes, is in his heart humble but is also a servant. You see those were the marks of a false prophet or a false shepherd. We see we need to remember, we need to ask ourselves these questions when we hear a man or woman teach and preach the Word , the guy who claims to be a prophet. We need to ask, "Is what they are saying true to Scripture. Who does this message benefit? Are they trying with their words to control the lives of people?" And then we ask ourselves. "Is their life like Christ?"
You see, friends, knowing and understanding these things will help us discern between the true prophet and a false prophet of God. They will help us to be discerning in these last days and friends, we need to be discerning in these last days. And may the Spirit of God take the Word of God and help us to be discerning for His glory.
