Listening for the sake of ministry and mission matters now more than ever. I gave this talk at the Southern Presbytery Annual General Meeting in August 2014. Many of the ideas in the talk come from my book, The Power of Listening: Building Skills for Mission and Ministry. The six main points I address in the talk are: 1. Listening matters for mission more than ever 2. Listening matters for ministry within congregations more than ever 3. Listening skills can be taught fairly easily, but churches seldom talk about listening skills 4. The biggest obstacles to listening come from within 5. Listening to people and listening to God require many of the same skills 6. Holy listening honors the incarnation
