Video Portrait of Mario Bustamante
I have illustrated in a short portrait a Colombian "todero", a master of none, narrating his experience as an immigrant in New York City's Lower East Side; questioning his reasons for migrating into this country, the consequences of being away from home, his dreams and nightmares, his work, his art. However, this character is not your typical immigrant. Bustamante is a rebel, a fighter that shows an alternative lifestyle which fits part-time into the system.
These are some of the unique and interesting points unveiling an underground movement in New York City, a passionate defiant social movement that has battled for over 10 years in favor of legalization and regularization of the squatter community. They fight for recognition of their right for affordable housing and acknowledge the governments position on evictions as violations of fundamental human rights.
