Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans History Month is in February every year and has been going since 2003. It is a chance for English schools to engage in events, or implement ideas in their classrooms, that combat the epidemic of homophobic abuse from and between children, and fights the cult of verisimilitude in education.
Please lobby your headteachers to get them to engage in this fantastic educational event. If they aren't participating - demand to know why not and insist they do. Many Education Authorities, and school managers, including headteachers, are either actively homophobic, or are turning a wilful blind eye to abuse being perpetrated on their premises.
This is important.
LGBT History Month is not about sex, it's about identity. Combating homophobia is not just combating ignorance - it's about saving lives.
My deep thanks to Tony Fenwick and Sue Sanders, co-chairs of LGBT HM and SchoolsOut ( http://www.schools-out.org.uk ), for organising Thursday's event and allowing me to make a small contribution for the first time - and as Promotions Officer I look forward to doing justice to the organisation's good work and raising its public profile.
