"Happiness being the ultimate end proposed by the society" 1768.
From sowing to showing, follow three members of the oldest horticultural society in the world. The Ancient Society of York Florists history is revealed alongside the nature of perfection, the satisfaction of hard work, and the humility of top growers.
"We're all competitive people; people compete in different ways with sport or cards .... we compete by growing vegetables"
Founded in 1768, this society predates the Royal Horticultural Society by 36 years. Once the preserve of royalty and nobility, it's now a society anybody can join and get enjoyment and achievement from. Despite surviving two World Wars, with it's membership getting older and fewer people with time to spend growing, how much longer will it survive?
