Equus by Peter Shaffer was written in 1973, telling the story of a psychiatrist who attempts to treat a young man who has a pathological religious fascination with horses. Equus is based loosely on the true story of a crime involving a 17-year-old who blinded six horses in a small town near Suffolk. Shaffer set out to construct a fictional account of what might have caused the incident, without knowing any of the details of the crime. The play, while a psychological drama, is in part something of a detective story, involving the attempts of child psychiatrist Dr Martin Dysart to understand the cause of the boy's actions while wrestling with his own sense of purpose. The play is challenging not only because of what level of emotion it requires from its cast but because of its subject matter.

At times shocking, Equus is hard hitting and tackles issues of religiosity, faith, sexuality and personal satisfaction in comparison with social morality. The play's structure is in some ways reminiscent of a classical Greek tragedy; choral work, masks and physicality to the fore, but in many ways is still today as controversial and relevant. Containing strong language, some scenes of nudity and difficult emotional concepts, it is far from being an easy theatrical romp for both audience and company.

Cast: Darren Cullen (Alan Strang), Richard Banks (Martin Dysart), Charlotte Jacobs (Jill Mason), Helen Rowe (Hesther Saloman), Ian Long (Frank Strang), Wendy Marsh (Dora Strang), John Shanley (Harry Dalton), Nick Hewitt (Young Horseman), Jody Crisp (Nurse)
