Six weeks after Laura Winthrop Abbot moved to Japan with her military spouse, the Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent tsunami occurred. After the earthquake, there was widespread destruction in the Tohoku region and the need was overwhelming. Laura didn’t hesitate and immediately sought ways to help those affected. Her initial work grew into a long term effort to provide relief and recovery called the TOMODACHI Initiative.
