The "Acorn and Opal" piano variations is a piece with multiple personality disorder. The theme includes three motivic cells around DCEbCF, BC#GF and DFAbBBbB. Variation 1 uses 'artificial sustain' from sympathetic strings, variation 2 reflects on the theme with the extreme range of the piano while variation 3 twists the material with new, staccato flavours. Variation 4 'meditates' with alternating chords comprised of the notes of the theme, accompanying the right hand which plays the melody. Variation 5 hurtles towards the end with driving force and crashes down with a loud cluster to finish.
