What killed Judy Garland? Years of being very self concious about her appearence and her acting abilities. MGM was good and bad to Judy. In those days, those early years of studios, looks mattered greatly to studio execs. Who were very willing to sacrifice their stars at the drop of a hat in order to turn a huge profit. In the case of Judy though, it affected her greatly. Eventually manifesting itself into pills, drinking and bouts of severe depression. Just this last evening, I watched a Judy Garland movie. She started to sing and my heart melted. It always does. There are few singers who have that affect on me, Judy Garland is one of them. Her voice is supremely magical and very even. Her tone just gets into my soul and from there, I get very teary eyed. No explanation except she has a gift from God. I am profoundly sorry I never met her or saw her in any venue. Her talent eclipses anything past, present.......perhaps future. Oh sure, there are many beautiful talented performers today, but not one of them can get into my very soul like Judy Garland. In my opinion, she was the greatest performer ever and I think she is stunningly beautiful in a way that perfectly matches her God given talent for singing. Just take a moment.......one moment, that's all. Play "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". Close your eyes. Let that beautiful sweet voice enter your heart. Even today, I get teary eyed when I hear her sing that song. No one else can do it like Judy Garland. What killed Judy Garland? People who surrounded her with nefarious intentions and with no concern for the health, wellfare, well being of a very beautiful young women. Only a few select actors, studio execs, personal friends cared about her enough to try and help elevate her above her problems. However, one stands above all else and that is Mickey Rooney. He really adored her and loved her very much. Every single time they worked together, you would have thought they were married. They were the genuine article. True to the bone and loyal to each other as friends. Yet, even Mickey Rooney could not help Judy overcome the years of abuse by men, studios and in the end pills and alcohol. I love Judy Garland.......I always will. 💖

Hollywood treated her so bad. She was tired and didn't get a chance to really live her life, but they didn't give a damn. They just worked her and worked her. RIP Judy!

What killed Judy? It was more than the drugs it was the Hollywood execs, her mother, some of those closest to her that's what really killed her. It's sad & infuriating.

I doubt that quote about not loving anyone, even her children, just herself and her audience was true. Both Liza Minnelli and Lorna Luft have said on many occasions that, even when their mother was at her lowest, they still knew she loved them and that she was a wonderful mother. It seems a lot of the information in this documentary is fictional bullshit that is intended to take away from Garland's life and shows none of her triumphs.

Benzodiazepines ruined my life, so I can only imagine how terrible barbiturates must have been.  Her husband said she tried to quit cold turkey and spent 18 hours in a room alone, screaming.  Whoever gave such powerful drugs to a child should rot in prison.
