It was 1942 and the USS Truxton was en route to a war-torn Europe. Among the crew was an African American sailor, Lanier Phillips, who joined the navy to escape the "Deep South" of the United States where racism was prevalent. When disaster struck off Canada's east coast, what followed changed his life. When the residents of St. Lawrence, Newfoundland reached out to Lanier Phillips with kindness, they changed his view of humanity and inspired him to greatness. Paul Johnson has this story.
