Heres a great exercise that requires speed and precision. The groove is inspired Jason Bittner, the drummer of Shadows Fall and features on his fantastic DVD 'What Drives The Beat'. Bittner refers to the pattern as the skank beat.

The first example shows the pattern where the hands alternate between the cymbal and snare drum. In this case, my right hand plays the cymbal and leads the pattern, and the left hand plays the snare. We're playing 8th notes here, so remember to count '1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +'. The bass drum and cymbal hand plays on all the numbers - the snare plays on all the '+' notes.

Next, instead of my cymbal hand just playing the numbers in a quarter note fashion, I now play all the 8th notes. Snare and bass drum remains the same.

Lastly, I add some double pedal bass drum parts to the groove. They are two 16th notes made up of a right and left stroke with the feet. Feel free to add these quick double pedal notes where you feel they work best within the pattern.

The idea of this beat is to play it at insane tempos! Start off slowly, playing as consistently as possible Then try pushing it to 200 bpm and beyond to really get the beats up to speed! Enjoy...
