An Elementary Science video for kids/students that explains about the effect of different natural indicators with an experiment.


Litmus is the most commonly used natural indicator which is extracted from lichens. It has a mauve color in distilled water. It turns red when added to an acidic solution & turns blue when added to a basic solution. Litmus is available in the form of a solution, or in the forms of strips of paper available as red and blue litmus paper.
To a tumbler containing lime juice add some water. Put a drop of this solution on a strip of red litmus paper, note down if there is any change in the color. Do the same with blue litmus paper. The blue litmus paper turns red as the lemon juice contains citric acid. Repeat the same activity with following substances:
Tap water -- Red litmus paper and blue litmus paper -- no change in the color
Detergent solution- Red litmus paper urns to blue, blue litmus paper-no change
Aerated drink - Blue litmus paper turns to red, red litmus-no change
Soap solution - Red litmus to blue, blue litmus-no change
Shampoo -- Blue to red, red litmus --no change
Common salt solution -- neutral sol
Sugar solution -- neutral sol
Vinegar -- Blue litmus to red.
Baking soda -- Under acidic conditions red litmus paper to blue, under basic conditions blue litmus to red
Milk of magnesia -- red litmus to blue
Washing soda solution -- red litmus to blue
Solutions which do not change color of either red or blue litmus are known as neutral solutions. These are neither acidic nor basic.
