Q: What can you tell me about making this video?
A: There are actually five versions of the video ...
1. When I started working on this video, this first thing I did was a very standard bar-graph version. I worked on it to make the transition from slow chords to the fast passagework (near the beginning) as dramatic as possible. I got it to be pretty startling by using very different scroll rates. I ended up making a version of this for my 3D channel (3D, musanim3D)...

2. ... then, I got side-tracked by the idea of two diagonal lines intersecting at the point of a note. When I saw what it looked like, it reminded me of a searchlight, so I tweaked it to look more like that; it also uses the Chromadepth 3D coloring (Searchlight, musanim) ...

3. Returning to the original idea, which was to have something separate from the notes that was nevertheless connected to the notes somehow, I experimented with a "note spewer" that spit the notes into their final position. In the original version, the source of the spewed notes was relatively close to the notes' final position, but when I tried putting it instead at the left margin, it reminded me of wind, so I worked to make that more wind-like (Wind, smalin) ...

4. ... after which I realized that the pre-sounding fast notes were hardly visible; so I made another version with the pre-sounding notes brighter; while I was at it, I had the notes come from all four points of the compass, and added a "sonar" burst to the last notes (TwoWind, musanim) ...

5. At some point during these experiments, I noticed that the piece looked really cool all by itself (without me doing much to make it fancier), so I decided to publish a really simple version for purists (SimpleClear, stephenmalinowski) ...

Q: What do the colors indicate?
A: In the 3D versions, color is used to create the depth effect; in the rest, colors are assigned by pitch, according to a scheme called Harmonic Coloring; you can read about it here ...

... and here is a playlist with other videos using this method of coloring ...
