ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Many bad drivers caught by red light cameras in Albuquerque are thumbing their noses at the tickets and the fines.
The city has more than $10-million dollars in unpaid red light camera tickets.
The current policy is just to ask people to pay the tickets.
"You're issued two letters saying that you have this outstanding debt from these citations and they kindly ask you to pay it," said Albuquerque Public Safety Director Darren White, adding, "I think given the numbers its clear that hasn't worked."
Public safety officials said that has to change. One possibility is sending unpaid tickets to collection agencies.
"If you are issued a citation, we want you to pay that and if you don't we need to go after you," White said.
Any changes to the city's collection policy would have to be approved by the city council.
