Worcester Massachusetts Firefighters Jon Davies and Brian Carroll both came home last night.

The joy of Firefighter Carroll's release from UMass Memorial Medical Center — University Campus was tempered by a somber ceremony about 9 p.m. in front of Southeast Station on Grafton Street.

Called a "missing man" procession, firefighters lined the sidewalk in front of their trucks as the body of Firefighter Davies, who died Thursday morning in a fire at 49 Arlington St., arrived back in the city.

District Fire Chief Frank D. DiLiddo III called the firefighters to attention as a city police cruiser drove by, followed by Rescue 1 — the firetruck Firefighter Davies served on. Rescue 1 was followed by a gleaming white Cadillac hearse carrying Firefighter Davies' body. The hearse stopped in Grafton Street, and the firefighters saluted. Then the hearse drove on, followed by a state police cruiser. Chief DiLiddo then dismissed the firefighters.

Chief DiLiddo said the ceremony was meant to escort Firefighter Davies' body back from Boston to the city. He said an all-volunteer contingent of police and firefighters organized the convoy, and said the Rescue 1 truck met the group at the city line. He said Firefighter Davies served two years at the Southeast station. Passers-by honked after the procession continued on to the funeral home. People in nearby parking lots stopped and watched quietly.
