Before he was a great basketball coach at Clemson, Auburn and Coastal Carolina, Cliff Ellis had one of the best garage bands around - The Villagers out of Marianna/Panama City, FL. On 6/6/66, I graduated and headed south from Columbus, GA to PC, just ahead of Hurricane Alma. We had three great days there, during which we met Wade Young and Larry Dean of WDLP. Laugh it Off was #1, and they graciously provided me with a copy. The next morning, Alma chased me all the way back to Columbus in driving rain. I stopped at WCLS, gave the record to music director Bill Holley, and it was added that night. Soon, WDAK was playing it, too. Both took it Top Ten, which also happened in most other markets that played it. I hope Coach Ellis sees this! I understand he's rightly proud of The Villagers and his music history!
