June 7th is Pat Derby's birthday. We're posting this slide show to honor, and celebrate, her remarkable life. Pat died on February 15, 2013, after a long battle with cancer.

Pat was the co-founder of the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), and its former President. She was also a partner, leader, mentor, teacher and a friend. She was the first to champion the cause of performing animals, and today, because of her work, and her fierce determination, most animal protection organizations have captive wildlife programs that address the issues of performing animals.

This brief slideshow is filled with some of our favorite photos of Pat's life, mixed with a selection of her memorable quotes. We played this tribute at her memorial celebration in March, and for that event it was set to music. Unfortunately, due to copyright laws, we had to pull the musical part of this presentation before posting online.

Happy birthday Pat.

With love, Ed Stewart and everyone at PAWS.
