Gene expression is stochastic because most genes exist in a few copies per cell. Funded by NDPA we reported direct observations for the production of protein one molecule at a time in a single E.coli cell providing a quantitative deion about the central dogma of molecule biology. We also proved that a stochastic singlemolecular event can change a cells phenotype. Funded by TR01 we have also developed SRS microscopy a label free imaging method based on vibrational spectroscopy to image live cells and tissues. Two former Ph.D. students discussed the NIHs Innovator Award
