Though Barbara Gordon was actually the second Batgirl, she is probably the most well known of all the Batgirls. She debuted in 1966 in Detective Comics #359. The comic book reintroduction of Batgirl was cordinated with the producers of the 1966 Batman televison show.
While headed to a costume ball dressed in a modified Batman costume, Barbera Gordon stumbled onto a crime scene. Bruce Wayne was being kidnapped by the Killer Moth. Barbara intervened and foiled the abduction. She gained the attention of Batman who opted to train her as a crime fighter. Inspired by her father, Police Commissioner Gordon, and encouraged by Batman she became an anonymous ally to both.
Batgirl wasn't really a sidekick to Batman, in the same way Robin was. She was an independent operator. 3d model created by John Picha
