Reminders We All Need
November 4th, 2018
Rick Lawrenson

It’s important for us to know what communion is, what it is not, and why it’s an important part of our life as a church.

Communion isn’t a means to salvation. It is a command to those who are already believers.

Do this in remembrance of Me

Salvation (Sins forgiven, Relationship with Christ, Eternal life) is given to us by Grace Alone through Faith Alone in Christ alone.
Ephesians 2:9-10; John 3:16; Acts 16:31

The Bread and the Cup Are Symbols to Help Us Remember

Do this in remembrance of Me

Romans 6:1-5

Communion is a Time for the Church to Come Together
· The church is those of us who are committed to one another and to Jesus by our faith. I’m not the church when I’m by myself.
· We call communion an “ordinance” of the church.

…since you come together – 1 Corinthians 11:17
I hear that when you come together as a church… – 1 Corinthians 11:18
Therefore when you come together in one place… – 1 Corinthians 11: 20
Therefore, my brothers, when you come together… - 1 Corinthians 11:33
…so that you can come together… - 1 Corinthians 11:34

Communion is our “Come to Jesus” meeting with God and one another.
So a man should examine himself; in this way he should eat of the bread and drink of the cup. – 1 Corinthians 11:28

You only need to “come to the cross” one time
We’re confronted with the once for all payment for our sin
We’ve been redeemed (bought by Christ) from sin’s hold on us

On the night when He was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and said, "This is My body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of Me."

In the same way He also took the cup, after supper, and said, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."
For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

After singing psalms, they went out to the Mount of Olives. – Mark 14:26
