Is there any connection between illegal immigration and Social Security’s backlog and reduced approvals in disability claims?
I regularly get comments on my YouTube channel from viewers who believe that the United States government seems to have more concern about the welfare of illegal immigrants at the expense of citizens who have paid into the system and now cannot get approved.
As I discuss in this video, I do not believe that there is any connection between immigration issues and Social Security disability delays or declining approval rates. I do believe, however that there is a mistaken belief in Congress that many SSD applicants are not legitimate and are seeking to take advantage of a disability claims system that has historically been too easy to manipulate.
My experience has been that there are very few people who are trying to game the system. Given that delays can extend for 2 to 3 years, it just doesn’t make sense that any able bodied person would sit at home, not work, and hope that a Social Security judge would award benefits without overwhelming medical evidence.
With very limited exception just about every disability claimant that I speak with - even if I don’t think I can win their case - has some significant medical problem and would much prefer to work.
