Duke, Bret, James, and I made a trip out to the Dismal with the intention of trying to capture what makes it such a challenging river, and why the place captivates people, and compells many people to return year after year. At least once a year we hear a story about a group whose trip goes horribly wrong, and on this trip, we wittnessed such an event. Many novices do complete this same paddle (in 9 foot rec. boats), and they have no idea how lucky they are. Very bad things can happen on any river, and this one, sometimes, can really feel like it wants to hurt you. It's not giant rapids and rushing water, but little cedar branches pointed at your neck, and snags and strainers that demand a near expert level of boat maneuvering. If you do this river, do not expect any assistance if you get in to trouble.
