Yesterday while sitting in my shop I heard a ticking noise that sounded like an electrical discharge. When I tracked down the source I found there was a spark coming from the end of my long wire antenna. Since we were in the midst of a mild thunder storm I concluded that my antenna was most likely picking up electrons from the approaching thunder clouds. After this experience I fully understand why it's important to add an external lightning arrester to your antennas. This could have been quite serious if lightning had struck my antenna.
