Mike Smith and Dave Crawford in the Port of Tacoma's Maintenance Shop replaced the 30-year-old engines in six Port forklifts with new, more efficient models. The repower project is expected to reduce diesel particulate emissions by at least 85 percent and reduce the amount of diesel soot by 400 pounds per year. Additionally, the project will extend the life of each forklift by 15 to 30 years.
