A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket has exploded on its launch pad in Cape Canaveral, Florida, as tropical storm Hermine impacted the area, according to eyewitness reports.

The cause of the explosion is not yet known, but witnesses report seeing thick black smoke rising from above the pad.

The explosion shook buildings some distance away, according to witnesses who posted updates on social media.

NASA has said that SpaceX was conducting a test firing of its unmanned rocket when the blast occurred Thursday morning.

The test, considered routine, was in advance of a planned Saturday launch from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

Eyewitnesses have reported that emergency service crews are on the scene of the incident.
