Steak and Ale Pie Recipe - I'm not sure when Steak & Ale Pie became a thing - it certainly wasn't in my childhood, but now it's everywhere. Chunks of beef slow-cooked in ale or beer. Steak n Ale Pie is a wonderful thing. However, many British pubs (and some restaurants and chefs who should know better), have this idea that you can put some stew into a ceramic dish, pop a frozen puff pastry shell on top, cook it briefly and call it a pie. They are wrong!
In this video, I show you how to make a proper steak and ale pie. The beef is stewed with onions in a rich gravy. The pastry is made with flour and lard melted in boiling water - classic hot water pastry. The whole pie is baked to perfection.
