the first track recorded for the "sky full of stars" album; and it's title track; this specially mixed 10-minute excerpt is a portion of the full album track.
the original recording of "sky full of stars" was made on the evening of may 8, 2009, and was essentiallly recorded live - without rehearsal, totally improvised - a voice was selected and a test level was set on the m-tron pro mellotron software; and one pass of the hands was recorded, take one, which was a live take lasting some 17:41.
then, immediately following, using a different selected mellotron voice, a second pass of the hands was recorded, again, take one, the second live take overdubbed onto the first, and this, those two live performances, one overdubbed onto the other, is what "sky full of stars" consists of. this same recording is what you hear now - it has never been altered, treated, or processed in any way, no effects or reverb has been added - this is the raw mellotron sound - and the only mix it has ever received was to verify that the levels of the two tracks was in order, when mixed for inclusion on the album in late 2011. this is as real as it gets - a sky full of stars.
seldom does one get lucky enough to make a single good stereo mellotron take lasting almost eighteen minutes in length on take one - to have recorded two nearly eighteen minute takes, in one evening, seems in retrospect unlikely bordering on the impossible. yet, with this track, and really, with all the tracks from the album of the same name, I was fortunate indeed when it came to what was played - that seemed to just come from somewhere deep inside, and I just sat there and watched as the album unfolded, most of it, during the latter half of 2009.

"sky full of stars" was recorded live in two one take, live passes of the hands, on may 8, 2009, using the remarkable m-tron pro mellotron software.
