On a pitch showing signs of variable bounce and with England's seam attack sniffing victory, India was never really in the hunt, especially after losing Sidhu and Shastri before stumps on day four. There were defiant efforts from Manjrekar, Vengsarkar, Azharuddin and Tendulkar but all were eventually snuffed out and failed to prevent the inevitable. Sharma swung capably at the end, hitting 38 from 36 balls to be India's high-scorer. Fittingly, the match was ended by Graham Gooch, who procured the last wicket by throwing out Sharma from mid-on. Fraser added three more wickets to his five in the first innings, while Devon Malcolm, Eddie Hemmings and Chris Lewis lent support, taking two each. England won by 247 runs and Gooch predictably was player of the match.
