Forum of the Committee of the Regions - Brussels, 30 November 2010. 20 years after the successful single market programme of 1992, it has become obvious that the European Union requires a renewed political initiative in order to unfold the single market's full potential for the benefit of all citizens. In view of the Europe 2020 strategy and the new Single Market Act adopted by the European Commission in October 2010, this Forum of the Committee of the Regions looked into challenges and opportunities of the new initiative from the perspective of Europe's regions and cities.
Achieving the Europe 2020 objectives requires the well-functioning of markets stimulating smart and inclusive growth leading to better products, services and jobs. The European Commission estimates that completing, deepening and making full use of the single market as suggested in its Communication would potentially stimulate 4% of growth of GDP over the next ten years.
