American Heart Association volunteers in New York worked hard in 2013 to make sure that all newborns have a greater chance at long and healthy lives. They passed a law which makes sure every baby will have a pulse oximetry test before leaving the hospital. That test, measuring the oxygen level in a baby's bloodstream, could detect a critical congenital heart defect, and lead to earlier treatment.
