The lyrics to the song "I Hung My Head" by Sting on his album Mercury Falling. This is what Sting had to say about the song in his lyrics' book:
"The song is now confirmed as a bona fide 'country' song, having been covered by the late, great Johnny Cash in the final years of his life. I was so proud to hear my words and music interpreted by the 'master,' although he did replace the last word in the second line of verse two, stream with sheen, for some reason. Whatever, he was probably just reading a misprint, and, even so, it didn't detract one bit from the final result. "I wrote my version of the song in 9/8; the guitar riff just occurred to me that way and reminded me of the gait of a galloping horse dragging a corpse. The story of a terrible accident, guilt, and redemption materialized out of the title and out of the haunting image of the riderless horse" (Sting 195).
