Freaknight 2010 in Seattle was the 14th annual Halloween, at WAMU Theater until 4am Sunday. .It was a resounding success.
The 4 stages were practicing dueling speakers, with what looked to be several hundred gigando sound pumps, exceeding the decibels inside a jet engine. I survived by stuffing my ears completely with moldable wax. The sound pumped my body tissue so full of energy that prancing and flying around for 5 hours on stilts was not yet exhausting. Not bad for a Senior, eh? I can't say no sweat, though, cause my last character was Phoenix the Firebird, whose feathered mask and costume is quite warm at that altitude after 1:30am. Looking out through dripping sweat and golden beak which moved with my jaw, I saw sensuous dancers clad in little but a hint of clothing, gyrating in pixilated blasts of strobe light in the laser-painted sky, all pulsing to the disco rhythms of bands like Infected Mushroom, Shiny Toy Guns and Black Sun Empire. Everywhere were glowing and flashing toys echoing the rhythms of the music, strobing fireballs, astrojax, dancing flocks of glowing fingers, off in the distance areal artists and circus performers of all types.
As the night wore on, I couldn't get close to the stages any more, even though I had to get to my costumes behind one stage. Ecstasy, marijuana and other drugs were flowing as freely as the booze from the lavish bars, and everyone was in a wildly festive mood. I have never danced with so many beautiful goddesses, who looked lovingly into my eyes and blew me kisses. I was very impressed with the loving, fun-filled nature of the crowd. Some of them even removed debris from my path.
It was a big adventure for me, which I generally enjoyed to the max. It was also the most dangerous gig I have done in my long checkered career on stilts! I was almost knocked down several times by careening revelers, and after about 1pm the debris and spilt drinks on the floor became quite hazardous. The other stiltwalkers were also troubled by the growing threats as the evening wore on. I would love to do another event like this but not after about one pm, when things get really over the top as far as toppling me over goes.
