Here is a rare radio broadcast from November 9, 1952. Dimitri Mitropoulos conducts the Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra of New York in this English performance (part I) of Darius Milhaud's opera.

The cast includes:

Christopher Columbus: Mack Harrell
Narrator: John Brownlee
Queen Isabella: Dorothy Dow
along with Norman Scott, Adolph Anderson, and David Lloyd.

The opera had its premiere in Berlin, 1930 under the baton of Erich Kleiber. It is a huge opera requiring many resources. It is written in two parts and is about 4 hours in length. Milhaud revisited the work in later years and presented a second version around 1955.
