Menghun Kaing, a young Cambodian woman, describes the obstacles she faced growing up in a poor, rural family, living in a one-room shack with no electricity or plumbing. With encouragement from her mother, she did well in high school, received a scholarship to the Royal University of Phnom Penh, and was given free room and board in Phnom Penh by an NGO called the Harpswell Foundation. In the Harpswell facility, Menghun also received English lessons, computer lessons, leadership training, and discussions of national and international events to develop her critical thinking skills. Menghun graduated in 2011. She plans to become a journalist and a leader of her country.
