Bacteria are found in all environments; some occur naturally while others are present as a result of human activities. The Indian River Lagoon is suffering from the influx of pollutants, including bacteria commonly associated with animals. The precise source of these bacteria is unknown.
Dr Peter McCarthy and Ph.D. Candidate Gabby Barbarite share some of their work to correlate bacterial inputs to the Indian River Lagoon with the sets of biological, chemical and physical data generated throughout FAU Harbor Branch, as well as a project investigating the incidence of a group of pathogenic bacteria in ther lagoon and their potential impact on human activities.
