The 9A Mustangs from just down the road take on the 2A Panthers all the way from Lake Wales as we open Day 2 of the 9th annual Metro vs. Florida Challenge!

Team Info

Wekiva High School Mustangs
Apopka, FL • Class 9A District 3 • Head Coach: Gersino Lubin (5th year)
Last Season: 11-16 (2-4) • 2018 Dist. Semifinalist • Through December: 3-7 (0-3) • MVFC Record: 10-5

After a state runner-up finish two years ago, last year’s 11-16 record came as a disappointment for the Mustangs. But 15 of those 16 losses averaged a 5.8 point margin, placing Wekiva on the edge of greatness. This year the Mustangs will look to the talents of their new and returning players to play their brand of basketball and get back into the state tournament.

The Vanguard School Panthers
Lake Wales, FL • Class 2A District 5 • Head Coach: Dan Sheppard (11th year)
Last Season: 13-12 (3-3) • 2018 Dist. Semifinalist • Through Dec.: 4-3 (1-1) • First MVFC Appearance

None of the current Panthers were on the 2016 squad that captured a District Championship and advanced all the way to the Elite Eight, but Coach Sheppard was there and knows what it takes to inspire his team to realize what’s possible. Senior Stephen Knowles, who was named to the Polk Preps Honorable mention list last year, will join David Labardy in providing leadership to a varsity roster that is, on the whole, still quite young.
