Shattered: Contemporary Sculpture in Glass is ArtPrize at Meijer Gardens

September 18, 2013 - January 5, 2014

The depth and dimension of sculpture by artists working in glass has expanded immensely in recent years. A sculptural entity in its own right, contemporary glass is marked by creative, conceptual and formal explorations in keeping with the dynamic nature of Contemporary art at large. Gathering together artists working across the United States and around the globe, this exhibition breaks down preconceptions about glass art, shattering traditional boundaries for sculpture as well. As a result, this presentation offers a global panorama of contemporary glass.

Twenty-five artists, 24 works from across North America, Europe and Asia have been carefully selected over the course of the last year by the curatorial team at Meijer Gardens and in partnership with the much celebrated Habatat Gallery in Royal Oak, Michigan. The primary objective was to select artists working formally and conceptually in ways that greatly expand definitions of both glass art and sculpture—blurring borders among genres that seem to merit little relevance today. Although several of the included works are more decidedly sculptural objects, others are complex, multi-faceted installations and multi-media presentations.

Meijer Gardens' audiences of every age and experience have long-since come to appreciate to the beauty and creative opportunities of sculptural endeavors in glass since the institution's first commission and exhibition with Dale Chihuly nearly a decade ago. However, the exhibition, Shattered: Contemporary Sculpture in Glass, carries that interest and enthusiasm through to new levels with a broad and diverse range of works by established and emerging masters from around the world. In its breadth, depth and wonder, this promises to be a powerful visual experience to visit time and again.
