Sleep deprivation effects: Study shows desire for junk food increases

A Columbia University study found an appetite for junk food can be triggered by sleep deprivation. The team at the Institute of Human Nutrition studied 25 healthy men and woman and found the brain's reward center would be activated by junk food in people who only sleep 4 hours for 5 days straight. The same effect didn't occur in people who got enough sleep. The study suggests people suffering sleep deprivation are relatively fatigued, which lowers their awareness and triggers the desire for a quick energy boost.
