David Davis: We can easily switch to a Canada plus

SO Donald Tusk, the wily European Council president, has let it slip. He has tweeted: "From the very beginning, the EU offer has been a Canada+++ deal. Much furtherreaching on trade, internal security and foreign policy cooperation. This is a true measure of respect. And this offer remains in place."

This is what I have been saying since Brexit talks began. It gives me no pleasure to say I have been proven right. Yet, the Prime Minister told Andrew Marr in an interview there is no alternative to Chequers. That is simply wrong.

I asked my old department last year to analyse the best EU-third country free trade agreements to create a template for a Canada+++ deal so that the negotiations could be reset. I could see the EU trying to steer us into conceding everything the British people voted to get rid of.

It was always clear they would use time against us. So we had to have a Canada+++ type deal to put on the table and to get them to explain why they had not offered one to us, as they had to other nations.

It fails to take back control of our laws, money, borders and trade as it proposed a common rulebook, a facilitated customs arrangement and de facto subjugation to the European Court of Justice.

That's why Chequers is less popular than the poll tax and now effectively dead.

President Tusk's comments prove that we could easily switch strategies to Canada +++.

There is even a version of the plan ready - the excellent Plan A+ published by the Institute of Economic Affairs.

The EU is saying it is ready to make that deal - although the Irish border is raised as a red herring.

No one wants a hard border and the EU should also realise no British government will ever allow the integrity of the United Kingdom to be challenged.

There is already a tax, currency and judicial border between Northern Ireland and the Republic, which is operated in such a way that is invisible on the ground. That will continue.

So there are now no excuses. Thanks to Mr Tusk it is clear what the EU are prepared to agree.

It's also clear what Brexit is supposed to mean; taking back control over our laws, money, borders and trade.

So the British Government's position simply has to adapt.

Chequers is unpopular and wrong. We need to be big enough to say so and seal the deal!
