Stephen A. McClave, M.D., Professor of Medicine and Director, ULH Nutrition Support Team at The University of Louisville, will present "Nutrition Therapy in the Hospitalized Patient: Is Feeding Less Better?" on September 19, 2013 at University of Louisville Department of Medicine Grand Rounds.

The talk focused on appreciating flaws in recent studies which have been interpreted to suggest that "forced mandatory feeding" in the ICU over the first week should be avoided, learning how the concept nutrition risk has replaced older concepts of malnutrition as an indicator for early feeding, and differentiating the benefits of early enteral nutrition in the patient at high nutrition risk from the potentially deleterious effects from indiscriminate use of parenteral nutrition.

Presented by the U of L Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition.
