The University of Alabama at Birmingham's Physical Therapy program celebrated it's 50th anniversary on Saturday, May 17, 2014.

The program began in 1964 and graduated the first class of baccalaureate degrees in 1967 before there was a University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Joan Bergman, the first physical therapist hired by UAB, initiated the PT program. The first program director was Miriam Jacobs, who worked with Dr. Jonas Salk as he developed the polio vaccine. The second director and first department chair was Marilyn Gossman who would guide the PT program for 1968 until 1998. The second department chair, Sharon Shaw, led the PT department from 1998 until 2013.

The UAB Department of Physical Therapy, housed in the UAB School of Health Professions, is ranked nationally by U.S. News & World Report and is renowned for visionary leadership, forward thinking and innovation.
