The Queen of Memphis Soul Born December 21, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee, Carla Thomas was a product of the early years of southern R&B soul singing. At age 15, she wrote her first mega hit "Gee Whiz (Look in His Eyes)". That hit brought an obscure fledgling record company (Satellite Records) to preeminence as Stax Records. In the next ten years, she had 22 singles on the national charts that made her a mega star in the music business. Alone with her father (Rufus Thomas) they dominated the charts with that "down home" southern soul style of R&B.
