iPhone5 wifi slowness
Using Downcast podcast app to demonstrate iPhone5 wifi slowness problem. NOTICE I am connected to my wifi access point (Apple Airport Extreme).
At 33 seconds, Downcast finds a new Freakonomics Radio podcast that it will download. The podcast is 39.9 MB's. Also notice at the top of the app, it shows 15 of 32 podcasts have been refreshed.
POINT #1: Watch the Freakonomics Radio download speed, starting at 35 seconds:
35 seconds = 45.2 KB's
36 seconds = 83.4 KB's = difference of 38.2 KB's
37 seconds = 148.5 KB's = difference of 65.1 KB's
38 seconds = 186.7 KB's = difference of 38.2 KB's
39 seconds = 237.6 KB's = difference of 50.9 KB's
40 seconds = 272.9 KB's = difference of 35.3 KB's
41 seconds = 318.2 KB's = difference of 45.3 KB's
42 seconds = 353.5 KB's = difference of 35.3 KB's
43 seconds = 391.7 KB's = difference of 38.2 KB's
44 seconds = 429.9 KB's = difference of 38.2 KB's
45 seconds = 459.6 KB's = difference of 29.7 KB's
46 seconds = 502.0 KB's = difference of 42.4 KB's
47 seconds = 544.4 KB's = difference of 42.4 KB's
48 seconds = 579.8 KB's = difference of 35.4 KB's
49 seconds = 613.7 KB's = difference of 33.9 KB's
50 seconds = 694.3 KB's = difference of 80.6 KB's
I then jump to the settings app, turn wifi off at 53 seconds, and jump back to the Downcast app which is still downloading the Freakonomics Radio podcast. Notice the upper left hand corner signifies that I am now on AT&T LTE with roughly half signal strength.
57 seconds = 955.9 KB's = difference of 261.6 KB's
58 seconds = 2 MB's = difference of 1092.1 KB's
59 seconds = 3.1 MB's = difference of 1.1 MB's
1:00 minute = 4.4 MB's = difference of 1.3 MB's
1:01 minutes = 5.8 MB's = difference of 1.4 MB's
1:02 minutes = 7.1 MB's = difference of 1.3 MB's
1:03 minutes = 8.4 MB's = difference of 1.3 MB's
1:04 minutes = 9.4 MB's = difference of 1 MB's
1:05 minutes = 10.3 MB's = difference of 0.9 MB's
1:06 minutes = 11.3 MB's = difference of 1 MB's
1:07 minutes = 12.5 MB's = difference of 1.2 MB's
CONCLUSION to point #1: When wifi was enabled AND in use Downcast was able to download at rates ranging from 29.7 KB's to 80.6 KB's. When LTE was enabled Downcast was able to download at rates ranging from 1.1 MB's to 1.4 MB's. A VERY OBVIOUS speed difference.
Point #2: At 33 seconds it has refreshed (looked at to determine what needs to be downloaded) 15 of 32 podcasts. At 49 seconds it has increased to 16 of 32 podcasts.
1 second = 4 of 32
2 seconds = 5 of 32
3 seconds = 5 of 32
...
7 seconds = 7 of 32
8 seconds = 10 of 32
9 seconds = 10 of 32
10 seconds = 10 of 32
11 seconds = 10 of 32
12 seconds = 10 of 32
13 seconds = 10 of 32
14 seconds = 10 of 32
15 seconds = 10 of 32
16 seconds = 10 of 32
17 seconds = 10 of 32
18 seconds = 10 of 32
19 seconds = 10 of 32
20 seconds = 10 of 32
21 seconds = 10 of 32
22 seconds = 10 of 32
23 seconds = 11 of 32
24 seconds = 12 of 32
25 seconds = 13 of 32
...
33 seconds = 15 of 32
34 seconds = 16 of 32
35 seconds = 16 of 32
36 seconds = 16 of 32
37 seconds = 16 of 32
38 seconds = 16 of 32
39 seconds = 16 of 32
40 seconds = 16 of 32
41 seconds = 16 of 32
42 seconds = 16 of 32
43 seconds = 16 of 32
44 seconds = 16 of 32
45 seconds = 16 of 32
46 seconds = 16 of 32
47 seconds = 16 of 32
48 seconds = 16 of 32
49 seconds = 16 of 32
...
THEN WIFI IS TURNED OFF and LTE takes over. When I return to the Downcast app:
56 seconds = 18 of 32 have been refreshed
57 seconds = 22 of 32
58 seconds = 22 of 32
59 seconds = 22 of 32
1:00 minute = 23 of 32
1:01 minute = 23 of 32
1:02 minute = 24 of 32
1:03 minute = 26 of 32
1:04 minute = 27 of 32
1:05 minute = 28 of 32
1:06 minute = 30 of 32
1:07 minute = 31 of 32
CONCLUSION to point #1: When wifi was enabled AND in use, in 49 seconds, Downcast was only able to refresh 12 podcasts. That is an average of 0.24 podcasts per second. When LTE was enabled Downcast was able to refresh 13 podcasts in 11 seconds, an average of 1.18 podcasts per second! A VERY OBVIOUS speed difference.
My Cox cable modem internet connection is NOT the problem. Here are a few speed tests to prove that:

My wifi AP (Apple Airport Extreme) is also NOT the problem, as I have many devices (including other Apple iOS devices, aka iPad2, iPad3, iPhone 4S, etc.) connected to it, and ONLY my iPhone 5's has speed problems.
UPDATE 7/24/13: Apple called and is closing my trouble ticket, as they believe the iPhone 5 is working to within their specifications. Listen to the call yourself: http://youtu.be/51ohnRci_ew
