Hugh Masekela - Chileshe

I woke up this morning on the day of my grandfather's funeral with this beautiful song in my head. So I played it, while processing my family's loss and wondered what is it's meaning. My grandfather was a "boer" and he called people "kaffer." It's surprising to me that this song that I know and love for a long time, but never knew it's meaning came to me on this very morning.  Even him in his later years let go of his intolerences. I grieve for him today with this song. I grieve like the African woman I am. The sad thing is that My white family couldn’t share in the same way. I was very fortunate to learn my fellow South African culture way to grieve. How therapeutic TO DANCE AND CRY and SING with our beautiful music

Thank god someone explained the "Chileshe" part. It is a common name among Ababemba of Zambia. Can be male/female/last name. There has to be a link somewhere between the usages in Zambia and in South Africa. I listen to Luambo "Franco" Makiadi go deep into Kikongo on some of his songs and I hear Zulu.

This music speaks to my soul. I cannot put into words how it makes me feel about Africa and its people - a country that I love yet makes me feel so sad.
