REXBURG - Jaywalkers around the BYU-Idaho campus are causing concern for the Rexburg police department. Numerous accidents, and a handful of deaths in recent years have made this an ongoing problem.

Officers are constantly educating pedestrians and drivers alike. Drivers need to be more cautious around campus, and pedestrians need to protect themselves.

I rode alongside Chuck Kunsaitis, and it didn't take more than a few minutes to catch a handful of jaywalkers.

"Because when you start coming out between cars, cars are looking for where they're going and not so much what's around them because there's so much stuff going on. We'd sure hate to see you get hurt by walking down the middle of the road like that, can you do that for me?"

"Sure," answered the pedestrian.

"Appreciate it," replied Kunsaitis.

"Students often jaywalk out of laziness. At this particular problem spot, there's a crosswalk a stone's throw away in either direction."

"What sort of excuses do people give you?" I asked Kunsaitis.

"Oh I'm running late. Being lazy. Some just come and tell you I didn't want to use a crosswalk," answered Kunsaitis.

And those attitudes are a real problem around BYU-Idaho where pedestrian and car traffic are both high. Watch as this woman jaywalks across the road right in front of the patrol car.

"Anytime a person comes in contact with a car, the car is going to win every time," said Kunsaitis.

That's the message Kunsaitis wishes everyone understood because it would help prevent the fatalities that have recently plagued the University.

In case you're wondering, you can receive a ticket for jaywalking in Idaho. Officers say people tend to worry more about getting a ticket than getting hit by a car. Clearly, that's not the logical way to be thinking about it.
