I'm excited to share with you the fourth installment of my guitar etude series. Inspired by my dear friend and wonderful guitarist, Courtney Hartman, the intention of this piece is to develop the ability to keep a simple, in this case two note, ostinato melody going, while playing more linear phrases in the tenor and bass range of the guitar. There are roughly 4 sections that make up the etude and each can be used as a launching pad for new contrapuntal improvisations. The penultimate section, which alternates between Ab Minor and G Major, was especially challenging for the left hand (in other words, it totally caused my left hand to cramp up) so I encourage anyone who might want to play it, to spend just enough time in that section to learn but without hurting yourself. One last note about the piece; I'm still exploring different ways of playing this material and I'm finding that if I practice singing one of the lines while playing the others, it greatly helps me to hear what all the parts are when I play them all together. Hope you enjoy and thanks for listening!
